E-Commerce Design System
Creating a centralized, accessible UI kit for a multi-brand Shopify Plus merchant. Standardized UX across 5 international storefronts.
The Problem
A multi-brand Shopify Plus merchant with 5 international storefronts was operating with completely disjointed frontend codebases. Each brand had its own styling conventions, component patterns, and UX behaviors. This made cross-brand features impossible to ship consistently and forced the engineering team to fix the same bugs in 5 different ways.
Our Approach
We built a centralized design system using React 19 and TypeScript, distributed as a private npm package. The system used Radix UI primitives for accessibility and Tailwind v4 tokens for visual consistency. We created a Storybook catalog with interactive documentation, visual regression testing with Chromatic, and automated a11y audits. Each brand consumed the same components but customized via a theme tokens file (colors, fonts, spacing) — no forking, no drift.
Key Results
80% reduction in UI bugs across all storefronts
New brand launch time cut from 3 months to 3 weeks
100% WCAG 2.1 AA compliance achieved and maintained
Design-to-development handoff reduced from weeks to days
Component reuse rate increased from 15% to 92%
